Calendar Ideas

Calendar

Calendar Time:  (It is good to do the calendar each day.  This teaches and reinforces many math and phonics skills.)

These are possible steps in your calendar time.  Let the children take turns helping:

  • Sing Months of the Year (Sing to the tune of “Ten Little Indians.” January, February, March, April, May, June, July, August, September, October, November, December.  These are the months of the year.)
  • Or/and Days of the Week (Sing to the “Adams Family” tune.  Days of the Week, [3 times] Sunday and there’s Monday, Tuesday and there’s Wednesday, Thursday and there’s Friday, and then there’s Saturday.  Days of the Week.  [3 times.]
  • Turn over the new day.
  • Put Today, Yesterday and Tomorrow on the number for the day of the week. (This can be pockets below the calendar.)
  • Put the Day with the words “Today is ____(Tuesday).
  • Read together, “Today is (day of the week), (month), (day number), (year).” Example: Today is Tuesday, September 6th, 2016.
  • Write a new number on the Number of Days chart. Write odd numbers in Red, Even numbers in Black, Underline in Green the count-by-five numbers. Circle in Blue the count-by-ten numbers.
  • Money: Add a penny to the chart.  (Use play money.) When there are 5 pennies trade them for a nickel.  Trade two nickels for a dime.  Trade a nickel and two dimes for a quarter.  Trade 4 quarters for a dollar.
  • Place Value pockets: Add a straw to the ones place.  When you have ten straws, put a rubber band around them and put them in the Tens place.  When you have ten tens, but a rubber band around them and put in the hundreds place.
  • Put numbers on the Place Value Pockets to match the straws.
  • Count the numbers on the Days of School Chart. On fives and zero numbers, count by fives and tens. After the numbers get to ten, the counting helper can choose to count forward or backwards.  End with a Zero when you count backwards.
  • In January add a sight word of the day, and clock time.
  • In February add, “The Pledge of Allegiance.”
  • In March add today’s weather.
  • When you have had 100 days, the money goes to a dollar, be ready to have a new number chart, put the ten 10’s straws in the place value pockets put together with a rubber band to make 100 and put in the hundreds place.  (There will be more about 100 day later in the lessons.)
