The Senses: Taste

The Sense of TasteOrange Rolls-2

Objective:  Children will learn about the sense of taste through discovery.

Materials:

  • Mirror
  • Lemon wedges
  • Unsweetened cocoa powder
  • Pretzels
  • Gum drop with sugar-coating
  • Make a review book of all the senses.  Make one page for each of the senses.  Example page: I use my tongue to taste _____.    Write in what the children say and have them draw the pictures. 
  • Book:  Me and My Senses by Joan Sweeney

Lesson:

  • Read part of the book.
  • Use a mirror to have the children look at the small bumps (taste buds) on their tongues.
  • Taste buds are connected to nerves which carry messages to the brain to tell what you are tasting.

Activities:

*Have the children rub each of these foods on the tongue and decide on the taste. 

  • sour (lemon )
  • bitter (unsweetened cocoa)
  • salty (pretzel )
  • sweet (gum drop with sugar-coating)

*Help the children make a personal review book of all the senses.
