Hey, Diddle, Diddle

Objective: Help children enjoy the language of the nursery rhyme,“Hey, Diddle, Diddle”.

Preparation:

Lesson:

  • Hey, diddle, diddle, the cat and the fiddle,
  • The cow jumped over the moon.
  • The little dog laughed to see such a sport,
  • And the dish ran away with the spoon.

Read the book or the rhyme then discuss words:

  • Action words– jumped, laughed, and ran.
  • Diddle– waste time.
  • Fiddle– a musical instrument like a violin
  • Sport– in this rhyme it means to play or have fun.  

Discussion questions:

  • What is the rhyme about?
  • Could this really happen?
  • Who plays a fiddle?
  • Who jumps over the moon?
  • Who laughed?
  • What are the dish and the spoon doing?

Activity: Hey, Diddle, Diddle, Book

Have the children write in the missing words and draw a picture to go with the sentence on each page.
